It's not exactly the most unreasonable possibility. I think we all have something or someone we'd kill for. [Like at this point in murdertown would anyone even lie about that, damn.] But why did things change so suddenly, then? Not enough people were dying and the directors were forced to step in to offer more incentives or threats? The difference between the first three weeks and these last two is stark, to say the least.
What if they're being told something about the nature of this world? A drastic truth. For example, "killing people will free people, since this world is actually fake". And then they're provided proof, somehow.
Hah, you're not the first person to suggest that this world isn't real! [A TERRIBLE FIRST DIP INTO VR, IF SO.] So I suppose it wouldn't be impossible, either.
